I've been thinking alot about world building and realized one thing that I actually liked about AD&D better'n than DnD and that was the gods. So I dug out my copy of Dieties and Demi Gods and thoroughly enjoyed once again a review of that book. I remember when I got it. The extended stat tables in the front of the book were worth the purchase price. In the source book there is no reference to world. The gods are just presented one after another. A stat block little short description and then on to the next. I realized the effect this had on me as a player. It made the world bigger then. However, the lack of a world story is distracting to me as an older player. I want a cohesive environment. So I thought I've had conflicting requirements. Complexity with cohesion. Until I read the Malazan books. There is a complexity that I seek with cohesion. T This is one my main world goals. Complexity with cohesion and pragmatic use. So now I realize that what I want in my world is many overlapping Pantheons. To create a tapestry of gods and religion with depth to support a more complex game. In this way the players can live in a modern society that follows one pantheon but once they step into the world they can realize that its much, much bigger.
